What Is Digital Marketing and Why Does It Matter?

    5 min read Diyama Solutions

Digital marketing simply means reaching your customers through digital channels: search engines, social media, WhatsApp, email, and your website. If your customers spend time on their phones (and in Zambia, almost everyone does), digital marketing is how you show up where they already are.

Why it matters more than ever

Think about how you found the last three businesses you bought from. Chances are at least one came from a Google search, a Facebook post, a WhatsApp status, or a friend sharing a link. That is digital marketing working, whether the business planned it or not.

The businesses that treat this seriously get three advantages:

    • They get found. When someone searches "guest house in Livingstone" or "catering in Lusaka", businesses with a strong digital presence appear first.
    • They build trust before the first conversation. Reviews, photos, and consistent posting all answer the customer's silent question: is this business real and reliable?
    • They spend less to earn more. A well-run Facebook page or Google Business Profile costs little compared to billboards or radio, and you can measure exactly what works.

The core channels, in plain language

Google Business Profile. Free. This is what shows your business on Google Maps and in local search results. For most local businesses, this is the highest-return channel available.

Social media (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok). Where you build familiarity. Consistency beats brilliance: two decent posts a week, every week, outperforms one amazing post a quarter.

WhatsApp. In Zambia and much of Africa, WhatsApp is where deals actually close. A WhatsApp Business account with a catalogue, quick replies, and a proper profile turns chats into sales.

Your website. Your digital home base. Social media accounts can be suspended; your website is yours. It should clearly say what you do, who it is for, and how to contact you.

Email and SMS. The channels you own. A simple list of past customers you message monthly can quietly become your most profitable asset.

Where to start (without wasting money)

    1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile.
    2. Set up WhatsApp Business properly: profile, catalogue, welcome message.
    3. Pick ONE social platform where your customers actually are, and post consistently.
    4. Ask every happy customer for a Google review.

Do those four things before you spend a single kwacha on ads. Ads amplify what already works; they cannot fix a weak foundation.

    The bottom line

Digital marketing is not a luxury for big companies. It is the modern version of having a sign on a busy road, a good reputation in the neighbourhood, and a friendly person at the counter. Start small, stay consistent, and measure what happens.
